CCS2 DC Fast Charger Controller: The Complete Guide to European EV Charging Standards

What Is CCS2?

CCS2 (Combined Charging System Type 2) is the European standard for DC fast charging. It combines the Type 2 AC connector with two additional DC pins and is mandated by the EU’s AFIR regulation for all public DC charging points. It is also adopted in many Middle Eastern, African, and Southeast Asian markets.

What Is a CCS2 Charger Controller?

A CCS2 charger controller (or DC SECC module) manages: High-Level Communication via ISO 15118 and DIN 70121; IEC 61851-1 basic CP signaling; power negotiation with the vehicle BMS; safety interlocks; and session management. It communicates with the charger CCU via CAN bus and with the vehicle via PLC over the CP line.

Required Standards for European CCS2 DC Fast Chargers

Standard Requirement
IEC 61851-1 Basic EV charging system, CP signaling
ISO 15118-2 High-level communication, Plug and Charge capable
DIN 70121 HLC still required for broad EV compatibility
OCPP 2.0.1 Backend communication (AFIR mandate from 2025)
CE Marking Electromagnetic compatibility, safety, LVD
