EVCC vs SECC: Understanding EV Charging Communication Controllers

Quick Reference: SECC vs. EVCC

Feature SECC EVCC
Full Name Supply Equipment Communication Controller Electric Vehicle Communication Controller
Location Charging station (EVSE) Inside the electric vehicle
Role Initiates HLC session Responds to HLC session
Protocols ISO 15118, DIN 70121, IEC 61851 ISO 15118, DIN 70121, SAE, CHAdeMO
Interface CAN to CCU, PLC via CP line CAN to BMS/OBC, PLC via CP line

AC SECC vs. DC SECC

AC SECC enables ISO 15118-2 smart charging on AC wallboxes, Plug and Charge, and smart grid integration. Often integrated directly onto the AC charger motherboard. DC SECC handles DIN 70121 (minimum for CCS2 in Europe), ISO 15118-2/20, and V2G. Typically a standalone PCB module connecting to the CCU via CAN bus.

The PLC Communication Module: How It Works

Physical communication uses HomePlug GreenPHY (HPGP) PLC modulated onto the existing Control Pilot (CP) line — no additional wires needed. A PLC communication module for EV charger includes: HomePlug GreenPHY chip, coupling circuit for CP line, MCU (STM32) running the protocol stack, and CAN interface to the CCU.

DIN 70121 Communication Module: Still Relevant?

Yes. Millions of European EVs only implement DIN 70121. European DC charger conformance testing requires it. Share Charging’s SECC simultaneously supports DIN 70121 and ISO 15118, automatically selecting the right protocol based on vehicle capability.

Share Charging SECC/EVCC Product Summary

Product Protocols Market
AC SECC PLC Module ISO 15118-2, IEC 61851-1 Smart AC wallbox, commercial AC charger
DC SECC QC PLC Module ISO 15118-2/20, DIN 70121, CCS1/CCS2 DC fast charger (40–1600 kW)
EVCC Module ISO 15118, DIN 70121, SAE, CHAdeMO EV vehicle side (Chinese NEV export)

All SECC modules are TÜV Rheinland and DEKRA certified — the first in China to achieve this dual certification.
